VI. National Marine Sciences Conference (May 15–17, 2024)
The conference featured comprehensive scientific presentations and sessions covering various disciplines within marine sciences, including marine biogeochemistry, physical and chemical oceanography, climate change, marine pollution, living resources and ecosystems, and emerging research technologies. The event commenced with opening speeches at the Congress and Cultural Center Conference Hall. Following a moment of silence and the Turkish National Anthem, the Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries, Prof. Dr. Şevki Kayış, and the Vice Rector, Prof. Dr. Göktuğ Dalgıç, delivered remarks addressing the objectives of the conference and recent developments in marine sciences. Throughout the three-day program, academics, researchers, and participants from the field of marine sciences contributed to the conference sessions. Numerous papers were presented by experts from different disciplines of marine sciences, fostering scientific discussions, professional interaction, and collaborative opportunities.

The conference addressed the historical development of seafood processing technologies, current application methods, and innovative technological approaches in the field. Participants were informed about the importance of modern processing techniques in terms of efficiency, quality, and sustainability, as well as current industry trends and future expectations. The economic impacts of processing technologies on the sector were also evaluated. The conference was attended by faculty members, students, and representatives from the private sector. Throughout the event, participants actively engaged in the presentations and contributed during the question-and-answer sessions. Prof. Dr. Ali Koçak (Ege University, Faculty of Fisheries) participated as the invited speaker and provided scientific evaluations regarding the future of seafood processing technologies.

The conference comprehensively addressed modern taxonomic research methods related to freshwater fish diversity in Europe and West Asia. Methodologies for examining morphological and genetic characteristics of different species, contemporary approaches in taxonomy, and scientific techniques applied in field studies were presented in detail. The event was attended by academic staff and students of the Faculty of Fisheries, and the presentations were followed by an interactive question-and-answer session. Dr. Nina G. Bogutskaya participated as the invited speaker and shared her scientific evaluations on freshwater fish diversity and taxonomic studies.

The conference addressed the ecological importance of sturgeon species within Türkiye’s natural and river ecosystems, the potential for artificial reproduction and aquaculture of these late-maturing species, their economic value in aquaculture, and the need for developing a national production calendar in this field. At the end of the conference, questions from industry representatives regarding sturgeon breeding techniques, challenges encountered, and possible solutions were answered by the speaker. The event was attended by the Rector of our University, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Karaman; Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Ali Bilgin; faculty members; students; and representatives from the private sector. Zaur Salmanov (Director of the Khilly Sturgeon Hatchery, Azerbaijan) participated as the invited speaker and shared his expertise on the subject.
