The project titled "Combining Zero Waste and Sustainable Design Principles in Reducing Microplastics and Nanoplastics in the Sea Chitosan Recycling Application" presented by Assoc Prof Dr Hatice ONAY, Faculty of Fisheries, Department of Fisheries and Processing Technology, Department of Fisheries Technology, within the scope of TUBITAK 1001, was found worthy of support.Microplastics (MP), which occur in marine ecosystems and are defined as one of the environmental pollutants, are formed by the breakdown of various products used on a daily basis. It is now well-established that microplastics are present in almost all water environments and aquatic organisms. The project's objective is to protect the marine ecosystem. It aims to utilise marine waste for biopolymer production and to obtain membranes for use in membrane-based NP/MP separation technology with the chitosan material obtained from them. This project will make a valuable contribution to the sustainability of the aquaculture sector by converting aquaculture waste into high-value products. It will also provide insights into the performance of chitosan-based membranes in MP/NP separation in water environments, increasing their potential for wider use. In this context, we are pleased to announce that Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış KARSLI from the Department of Processing Technology of the Faculty of Fisheries at our University; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sadiye VELİOĞLU from the Nanotechnology Institute of Gebze Technical University and Res. Asst. Tuğba UYSAL will be serving as researchers in the relevant project.
The project will run for 36 months and has a total budget of 1,650,000 TL.
